Where to eat in Bath

If you want to treat yourself:-

The Olive Tree is the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Bath and has a seasonal British menu with a Mediterranean influence. If you fancy a little bit of indulgence then this is the place to dine. More of an experience rather than just a meal you can dine on a choice of set menus filled with a selection of delicious food. (Vegan, vegetarian, dairy free and pescatarian options are available if the restaurant is advised in advance.)

Menu Gordon Jones - a surprise tasting menu so not for someone who doesn't like surprises! Gordon Jones was born in Birmingham, brought up in Scotland and worked in an Indian restaurant at the age of 14. His dishes are influenced by asian flavours and he was previously the Head Chef at The Royal Crescent Hotel before opening his own restaurant. (As the menus are set the dishes cannot be altered to offer vegan or vegetarian options.)

Clayton's Kitchen - a favorite of local foodies and visitors alike this restaurant sells uncomplicated dishes that showcase the freshest ingredients. The chef Robert Clayton is inspired by Mediterranean and modern French cuisine and was one of the youngest chef's to ever receive a Michelin star while working at Huntsrete House Hotel in 1995. He moved to Bath in 1997 to be Head Chef at the Bath Priory where he received another Michelin star which he retained for his 7 year stay before Clayton's Kitchen was opened which is in a 4-story Georgian townhouse. (Vegan menu available.)

Oak Restaurant - A small plate vegetarian restaurant that serves seasonal dishes from within one of Bath's oldest buildings. Serving lunch, coffee & dinner the core value of Oak is to put the soil first selling produce that comes from land that has been farmed without chemicals. They specialise in organic, biodynamic and low intervention ingredients. This extends to their wine list so you can enjoy a guilt free glass of wine! No time to dine? You can also pop in to buy a bottle of natural wine. They also have their own chemical free market garden just outside of Bath. (Most of the dishes are vegan or can be adapted.) 

Best pubs in Bath:-

The Bell Inn – A rustic free house serving real ales, it’s probably the most famous pub in Bath! It’s where the locals go and the birthplace of a lot of bands and singers. They have regular live music and entertainment on throughout the week. Check their website for details.

Hare & Hounds – If it’s a sunny night we recommend getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre to the Hare & Hounds! A great country inn with fantastic views of the city and a freshly prepared menu using local produce

The Saracen’s Head – rumoured to be the oldest pub in Bath and was said to be a temporary home to the famous Charles Dickens!

The Black Fox – Looking for a quiet watering hole that’s just off the centre with Bath gin, local craft beers and cider on tap? Look no further than the Black Fox, an 18th century inn which also serves classic pub grub with a twist!

Best for Casual Dining/Cocktails:-

Chai Walla - a small 'hole in the wall' Indian street food takeaway which serves tasty dishes such as the Onion Bhaji Wrap (highly recommended!) which comes with a freshly made vegetable samosa. This takeaway made the headlines in 2021 when the owner successfully sent a samosa and wrap into space - before it crash-landed in France. (vegan options available). 

Turtle Bay - A Caribbean restaurant inspired by a surfside bar in Barbados. Get a taste of the Caribbean with great tasting food, music, cocktails and a large selection of rum. (Vegan options available)

The Coconut Tree - opened by a group of Sri Lankan friends and family who wanted to share the taste of unique Sri Lankan flavours. The menu is a collection of small dishes, and it's recommended you try a Hopper - a coconut milk pancake served with tasty toppings such as caramelised onions and Sri Lankan salsa. (Vegan options available) 

Rosa's Thai - The founder Saiphin grew up on a mountain farm in Northern Thailand where she was growing her own crops from the age of 13. The noodles she served from her parents house became increasingly popular and her love of food was born. She has since lived in Hong Kong then moved to London with her partner in 2006. Starting as a street stall in London they then took over the lease of a traditional British cafe and decided to keep the name to honour the English tradition (and because they didn't have the money to change it!) Every dish is created by the owner, based on family recipes or inspired by places she has visited. She combines seasonal British ingredients while cooking authentic Thai dishes. (Vegan options available) 

The Dark Horse - This covertly cosy and dimly lit cocktail bar sits below street level and has been voted top 3 in the UK by Imbibe magazine. Giving a relaxed speakeasy vibe, it shakes, stirs and pours smooth and zingy cocktails and offers a seasonal menu focusing on fresh, local ingredients.

The Bath Distillery Gin Bar – an apothecary of herbal flavours, fruity tastes and savoury notes, where mixologists create innovative and indulgent gin-based drinks. A firm favourite amongst locals and visitors alike, it’s definitely a spot to stop by.

 

For Traditional English Food:-

Sally Lunns - One of the oldest houses in Bath and known for its bun, but that's not all that's on the menu. With a blend of tradition and contemporary, you will find ’Trencher’ dishes on the dinner menu. Traditionally, a type of bread, known as a ‘Trencher’ was used before plates. This remained popular in Georgian England and Sally Lunn's Bun is the perfect example. There are also homemade savory pies made each day served with mash, gravy and seasonal vegetables. A must have when in England!

The Pig & Fiddle - An English pub that serves hearty dishes with twists on pub classics. Naturally, a traditional Sunday Roast is available on a Sunday. Seasonal ingredients are used and local suppliers used where possible. There’s also a selection of award-winning beer from Butcome Brewery which you can enjoy in the courtyard beer garden during the warmer months. (Vegan options available and Gluten Free menus on request)
