Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive in Pont Saint-Martin and overnightThere are various connections and combinations to the Aosta Valley, but the nearest airports are Turin or Milan. From there you can catch a train-bus combination to Pont Saint-Martin. The shortest route is from Turin, which takes around 2-3 hours with a change in Ivrea.
Welcome to Pont-Saint-Martin, the gateway to the Aosta Valley, a pretty village located on the border between Valle d’Aosta and Piedmont. Famed for its Roman bridge of the same name. Take a wander through the streets and appreciate this strategic gateway to the Alps which is an important stop on the Via Francigena pilgrimage route to Rome.
This traditional hotel is decorated in a classic Italian style with wooden furnishings and warm colours. Bedrooms are equipped with a TV and free Wi-Fi access, and some have a balcony. It has a bar and family-run restaurant with outdoor terrace.
A short bus ride to Lillianes in the Lys Valley takes you across a scenic stone bridge to the right bank of the river, where a wide and beautiful mule track runs. After a few metres of altitude, you’ll reach the village of Chemp. It is an open-air museum where between the houses and haystacks you can admire the ‘anime di Chemp’ sculptures by Angelo Bettoni and other artists. From here the path goes downhill through the hamlet of Marine to Perloz, where an osteria (traditional restaurant) invites you to take a break. Passing the Notre Dame de La Garde pilgrimage church, you reach the bottom of the valley. Above you are the sun-soaked terraced vineyards from which the fragrant, multi-award-winning local DOC red wines come from. You continue walking back to Pont Saint-Martin.

A short transfer will take you to Pontboset where two medieval bridges adorn the town. Through chestnut forests and along the Ayas River you descend to the bottom of the valley. The villages of Hône and Bard, towered over by an imposing fort, come into view. In Bard, take the panoramic elevator up to Bard Fortress, originally built in the 10th century. From here you get a magnificent view and it also houses the Museum of the Alps with various exhibits on the local area (entrance included). The town of Bard itself has been voted ‘one of the most beautiful in Italy’ due to its houses with frescoed facades.
Afterward, continue to Donnas. This town is famous for its vineyards and it’s possible to visit a winery whilst here. You reach the town along the most scenic stretch of the original ancient consular Roman road, the Via delle Gallie. In the morning you can either take a bus or train (taking approx. 1 hour) to Aosta, the principal town in the valley where the inhabitants speak both French and Italian. On arrival at your centrally located hotel, you can leave your luggage and go off to discover the city. It has a typical Italian flair with small shops and many bars and restaurants, surrounded by a magnificent mountain panorama. It's worth exploring the historic buildings such as the Roman Theatre, and the Porta Praetoria city gate. The ancient town walls of Augusta Praetoria Salassorum are still almost entirely intact. The Roman Forum also remains, with its long barrel vaults, this building is annexed to the cathedral that was built in the 4th century but replaced in the 11th century with a new edifice.
Located in the historical centre of Aosta. It's surrounded by a variety of shops, bars, restaurants and cafés, and is 5 minutes' walk from Aosta Train Station. Some rooms offer a mountain view. A breakfast buffet is served every morning.
A short but fairly steep ascent from the gates of Aosta leads through vineyards and orchards, you can take your time and once at the top, you’re afforded incredible views of Aosta and the surrounding mountains. The walk continues along shady forest trails, past wildflower meadows, and through charming small towns. Castles and palaces can be seen in the distance. In the hamlet of Moulin di Gressan, the eco-museum Maison de Gargantua is worth a visit. Before reaching Aymaville, you should visit the Château de Aymaville, which is along the way. With its medieval and Baroque construction, it is one of the most beautiful and elegant castles in the Aosta Valley. At the end of the walk, a transfer will pick you up and take you to your accommodation in Vetan.
Depending on availability you may be accommodated in Aymavilles. If so, you’ll then have a transfer tomorrow morning to take you to the start of your next walk.
Ascent/Descent: 551m/465m
The rustic guest house is surrounded by well-kept pastures and flowering meadows in the hamlet of Vetan. The old stone and wood building has been completely renovated with great skill and good taste, preserving some valuable architectural elements from bygone times. Antonella and Elida will make you feel at home.
In a typical mountain village at an altitude of 1,780 m. It enjoys a sunny position with a wonderful panoramic view. The kitchen offers specialties of traditional home cooking as well as typical dishes from the Aosta Valley; in addition, fine wines are served.
From Vetan, follow the path uphill a bit until you come to a breathtaking high-altitude trail. A spectacular mountain backdrop accompanies you over wide alpine pastures and on old mule tracks through mixed forests. Then it's downhill to the small lake Lago di Joux and from there, following a babbling brook, you reach the sleepy, slate-roofed village of Vens. The trail continues downhill before turning into a gentle path to Vedun. From here, you will have your first view of the majestic summit of Mont Blanc. A taxi awaits you and takes you back to your hotel.

Enjoy a pre-walk coffee on the terrace of Café La Cascata, right next to the roaring waterfall. Other Information
Is it for me?If you want to enjoy walking in the mountains and experience Italy’s culture, culinary highlights, and excellent wine, but don't want to take on long days of heavy-going ascents and descents then this holiday is ideal for you.
It’s a tour designed to make the mountains accessible to a wider range of walkers and not only those with extensive alpine hiking experience. Walk through the famed Aosta Valley on the easy to moderate stages of the well-waymarked Cammino Balteo path. The length of the stages gives you enough time to visit the many historical sites along the way, such as Fenis Castle and you have a free day in Aosta mid-way through your holiday.
Most of the time you are at an altitude of 800 to 1,000 m, although on the penultimate walking day, it goes up to around 1,920 m to make the most of the incredible mountain vistas. The stages are between 6 and 13 km long and the daily ascents and descents are manageable with most ascents below 500 m and most descent below 655 m (there are a couple of walks that have more than this, but they could be skipped if needed).
Slower Adventures | Where walking and cycling meet easy-going exploring, our Slower Adventures are the perfect combination. Most days are filled with picturesque journeys with some free time to dive into the destination and experience the people, local food and culture as you go.
Multi Centre Walking | With a mix of loop and point-to-point walks stay 2 or 3 nights in one place which offers the chance to slow down and really explore a destination.

Details of the accommodation we normally use are detailed below. These are subject to availability, and early booking is recommended.
We book en suite rooms as standard. If there are no en suite rooms available in an overnight location, we may book a room with shared facilities, but we'll always let you know first if this was the case.
Alternative Accommodation
We'll always try and accommodate you at the locations detailed in your itinerary. On the odd occasion, due to limited availability, there may be an option to be accommodated at an alternative location. In the unlikely event that we must accommodate you elsewhere, we'll let you know before confirming your booking. In this case, you can change your trip dates, or we can arrange taxi transfers to and from an alternative overnight accommodation (supplement payable).
Single Rooms & Solo Walkers
This self-guided trip is available to solo walkers for a supplement and is subject to availability. If you require single rooms within your party, we'd be happy to accommodate you although there is a single room supplement payable.
Meals
Breakfast is included each morning. In Italy this is generally a light continental breakfast. Lunch and dinner aren't included but are available from your hotel or nearby restaurants. Your accommodation may be able to provide a packed lunch on request and this can be booked on arrival. The food in Northern Italy is strongly influenced by its neighbouring countries so as well as wonderful Italian wines and cheeses, you’ll get pastries and bread more similar to those found in France and hearty sausages and stews that are reminiscent of Germany. Traditional specialties include matured Toma di Gressoney cheese melted onto polenta and Jambon de Bosses, a cured ham that has been stored in hay at high altitude for several months before being flavoured with local herbs and spices.
Additional Nights
You may want to spend some extra nights along the route, either to rest or for those with plenty of energy to explore some of the other walking opportunities nearby. We recommend extra nights in Aosta, as there is so much to see and do here.

Time of Year
Spring in the Alps is normally sublime, and April, May and June are lovely, with most wildflowers blooming in May. Autumn is a perfect time of year as the landscape is made up of a gold and red pallet, so September and October are unmissable. The winter weather is starting to arrive in late October and November, but this is also the time with the fewest visitors so it’s great for gaining crisp fresh air and peace and quiet on the trails.
There are various websites that provide useful information about the weather and climate of your destination. A good website for climate information specific to towns and countries is: www.weather2travel.com
We recommend that you check the local weather forecast daily before starting your walk. TV and radio news and corresponding websites are ideal for this purpose. In addition, your accommodation hosts are usually well-informed and will be happy to help you.
Arrival into Turin: We recommend flying to Turin Airport. There are regular buses to the central rail station, which take approximately 30-45 mins. You can catch a train (trenitalia) from here to Ivrea (40min) and then to a bus to Pont-Saint-Martin (15min).

From Milan City Centre there are various bus connections to Pont-Saint-Martin (2hr 10mins).

To make your departure as relaxed as possible, we recommend you spend an extra night in the city you are flying home from. If you want to extend your travel Courmayeur und Chamonix are easily reachable.
Your bags will be collected from your accommodation each day and moved onto your overnight accommodation. Except from Pont Saint-Martin, you will take your main luggage with you to Aosta on the train or bus. Don’t worry though this is a straightforward journey, and you can drop your bag off at your centrally located hotel on arrival, ready to spend your free day discovering the town. Please limit your luggage to one bag of up to 20kg per person.
At Macs Adventure, we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase. Your booking includes the transfer of 1 bag per person and the weight of your luggage allowed is specific to the destination you will be travelling to. This is why it’s very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you don’t stick to these limits, there’s a chance you’ll be charged locally both for extra bags and/or if they're too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees), which we must respect.
Extra Nights
You can add extra nights anywhere during the trip. If time allows, we recommend spending more time in Aosta, as there is so much to see and do here.
Tourist Taxes
In some places, tourist or local taxes may apply. Wherever possible, Macs will cover these taxes for you in advance, but this is not always possible, and you must pay it directly at your accommodation. The amount varies depending on the location and number of nights spent there and is usually between €1-3 per person per night.
In your info pack, you’ll find a detailed kit list of the walking equipment you need, such as good hiking shoes, functional clothing, waterproofs, and a daypack.
It's a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity, emergency evacuation, and hospital care.
We recommend that you book quickly once you have decided on a trip, as we have carefully selected small and authentic accommodation for you. As a result, these can be fully booked very quickly. However, we'll always try and accommodate your plans.
Should a problem arise during your trip, we and our local partners are at your side with advice and action. You can reach us at any time during your trip on the telephone numbers given in your information pack.
This walking holiday is graded easy to moderate and involves approx. 4 hours of walking each day so you should enjoy an active lifestyle to get the most from this holiday. If you are unable to walk on any day you can use taxis or public transport to move on to the next nights' accommodation.
No problem! You can use public transport and local taxis to reach your next overnight stop. Full details are included in your info pack, or you can call us for a hand in making arrangements.
Unfortunately, we’re unable to accommodate walkers with dogs as many of the accommodation providers we use don’t accept pets and several sections of the way are closed to dogs as they're permissive paths through farmland.
You'll need good walking shoes/boots (ideally waterproof), comfortable walking clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a daypack, hats/gloves, a Water 2 Go bottle, etc. Our info pack has a list of all the equipment you'll need, along with some helpful suggestions.
Each morning where a luggage transfer is required, just leave your main bag in the reception area/luggage storage area and we'll have them transferred to the next location. Please limit the weight of your luggage to 20 kg per bag (one piece per person).
