TRAVEL INDUSTRY EMISSIONS

A visual representation of the travel industry's carbon emissions, highlighting environmental impact and sustainability challenges.

Understanding Scope 1, 2, and 3 Emissions

Scope 1 (Direct Emissions):

Office Gas/Oil Use: These are the direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that come from sources owned or controlled by our company, such as the combustion of fossil fuels for heating our office buildings. Reducing these emissions is a key part of our carbon footprint reduction strategy. Our focus is on improving energy efficiency within our operations and exploring cleaner energy alternatives.

Scope 2 (Indirect Emissions):

Electricity Bought by the Company: This includes the indirect emissions associated with the electricity that we purchase and consume. While these emissions occur at the site where the electricity is generated, they are included in our carbon footprint because we use this energy. Although Scope 2 emissions are not currently our primary focus, enhancing energy efficiency and increasing our use of renewable energy will be part of our long-term strategy.

Scope 3 (Indirect Emissions):

Employees
Business Travel: While we do not offer flights, our Scope 3 emissions include work-related travel through other means, such as car rentals, public transportation, and train journeys.

Commuting: The carbon footprint of our employees commuting to and from work is a significant part of our Scope 3 emissions. We encourage sustainable commuting options, such as carpooling, biking, and using public transit.

Working from Home: With the rise of remote work, energy consumption and related emissions from home offices are also part of our Scope 3 considerations.

Post and Brochures: The production, distribution, and disposal of printed materials contribute to our Scope 3 emissions. We are committed to minimizing waste and choosing more sustainable materials.

Laptops and Advertising: The environmental impact of electronic devices used by our employees, as well as the lifecycle emissions from marketing activities, are also included in Scope 3.

Product

No Fly Travel Education: Although we do not provide flights, we recognize the importance of reducing travel-related emissions. Therefore, as part of our product-related Scope 3 emissions strategy, we actively educate our clients and customers on the benefits of no-fly travel options. We promote longer, more sustainable trips that leverage low-carbon transportation methods, such as trains or buses.

Activities and Excursions: We support and promote eco-friendly activities and excursions that minimize environmental impact, aligning with sustainable tourism practices.

Hotels: We guide our customers towards selecting green-certified accommodations that prioritize sustainability, helping to reduce the overall carbon footprint of their travel experiences.

Integration into Our Carbon Action Plan

Scope 1 Reduction:

Our focus is on reducing direct emissions from our office operations. This includes improving energy efficiency and exploring renewable energy options. Regular energy audits will help identify areas where we can make the most impact.

Scope 3 Strategy Enhancement:

Business Travel and Commuting: We encourage sustainable commuting practices among our employees and promote the use of lower-carbon alternatives for business travel, including virtual meetings whenever possible.

No-Fly Travel and Longer Trips: As part of our commitment to reducing product-related Scope 3 emissions, we educate our customers on no-fly travel options. By promoting longer, more immersive trips that utilize sustainable transport, we aim to minimize the carbon footprint associated with travel.

Sustainable Activities and Accommodations: We partner with providers who prioritize sustainability, offering eco-friendly activities (hiking and biking) and recommending accommodations that are committed to reducing their environmental impact.

Conclusion

By understanding and addressing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, we ensure that our carbon action plan is comprehensive and impactful. Our strategy involves direct action to reduce emissions where we have control and influence, while also educating and encouraging sustainable practices throughout our value chain. This approach supports our broader commitment to sustainability and ensures that even in areas where we do not directly offer services, such as flights, we still contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the travel industry.
