5 Foods to Try in the Canary Islands

With gastronomic influences coming from the native Guanche, Spain, Africa and Latin America, and a mild climate perfect for growing delicious fruit and vegetables, there are many tasty specialities to be sampled in the Canary Islands! Here are some of my favourites!

Papas Arragudas - translated as "wrinkly potatoes" this dish might not sound very appealing but these small potatoes which have been boiled in their skin, salted and then dressed with Mojo Sauce are often served on their own as a snack.

Mojo Picon Sauce - A spicy sauce made with garlic, olive oil, red pepper, cumin and salt & vinegar.

Rancho Canario - a hearty soup dish almost similar to a stew ideal for re-fueling after a day's walking! Made with meat, potatoes, chick peas and noodles, it will certainly fill you up!

Gofio -  I first tried this Canarian speciality whilst climbing to the top of Mount Teide and boy did it give me the required perk up!  Known to be a superfood it is made from toasted cereals and added in everything from stews, to desserts, to ice cream. I tried it with milk and honey as a drink.

Bienmesabe -  translated as "tastes good to me", this dessert does what it says on the tin! A mouth-watering sweet puree made with ground almonds, egg yolk, sugar, lemon zest and cinnamon and served with ice cream.
