While many people might think of Iceland – in particular, Reykjavik – as the ideal destination for a city break it’s also a great family destination. The safe and welcoming country offers a host of family attractions as well as a fabulous outdoors environment. Natural pools: There are 18 thermal pools in the Reykjavík capital area alone, including the most famous Blue Lagoon.

Wowser waterfalls: It’s impossible not to be wowed by Iceland’s fantastic waterfalls. They can be seen from the roadside or on short hikes.

Plunge into a volcano: Take a tour with Inside the Volcano at dormant Thrihnukagigur, south of the capital. It is the only place on earth where you can enter a magma chamber. A moderate 50-minute hike to get to the crater is followed by a descent 120m to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift. Tours take place mid May to early October.

Taste sensations: Icelandic foods to try include hot dogs, soft ice cream, yoghurt-like skyr and liquorice.

Hike a mountain: The majestic Mount Esja, located close to the capital, is the perfect destination for a climb to a mountain summit.

Pony rides: Icelandic ponies are well known for their lovely natures and smooth rides. There are plenty of places to take a pony ride through green valleys and rocky lava fields.

Warm river bathing: Kids will love the idea of walking uphill, passing numerous steamy hot spring outlets, to reach a river where you can bathe, even in winter, in just a swimming costume. Hveragerdi is the place to head to for this incredible experience.

Wildlife wonders: Head off for a whale watching trip or to see puffins. Iceland is one of the best places in Europe to see whales (especially in summer) and while puffin populations are dropping you are still guaranteed to see these beautiful sea birds in the warmer months.

Festive Iceland: Reykjavík at Christmas is a delight. Be dazzled by the multi-coloured Christmas lights, visit the Hafnarfjörður Christmas Village, skate on Tjörnin Lake or play family snowballs.
