The North York Moors, one of the largest heather moorlands in the UK, is a haven of stunning English countryside and landscapes. On this hiking vacation, you'll engage all your senses with charming Lakeland villages offering tea and scones, cozy country pubs, amazing sea views, sheep-dotted hills, and vast moorlands. You'll also have the chance to meet fellow hikers and enjoy the warmth of cozy B&Bs. Choose between our Coast to Coast Walk or Cleveland Way trips, both featuring the North York Moors, and pick the route that suits you best.

The Coast to Coast Walk covers nearly 200 miles across two coasts, three national parks, and a variety of footpaths. This long-distance adventure takes you through scenic villages and the majestic mountains of the Pennines, the Lake District, and the North York Moors—a rewarding journey you'll remember forever. Alternatively, the Cleveland Way focuses entirely on the North York Moors, tracing the edge of the National Park and highlighting a range of landscapes from dramatic cliffs to tranquil seaside towns. Discover an untouched part of Northern England where dinosaurs once roamed, pilgrims founded abbeys and churches, and historic villages offer charming shops and warm local hospitality.

  • Wainwright's Coast to Coast

‘Surely there cannot be a finer itinerary for a long-distance walk! … The countryside traversed is beautiful almost everywhere, yet extremely varied in character, with mountains and hills, valleys and rivers, heather moors and sea-cliffs combining in a pageant of colourful scenery.’ A Coast to Coast Walk, 1973

Wainwright’s first visit to the Lake District in 1930 took him to the summit of Orrest Head, about which he said ‘those few hours cast a spell which changed my life'.

Since he made it famous, thousands have hiked this route in search of Wainwright’s legend as they follow his pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells.
