The Kingdom of Fife - Did You Know?
The Kingdom of Fife has a fascinating history and culture. Whilst not as famous as The Highlands or the Scottish Islands, it does have some interesting facts all of it's own.
- Without one shot being fired and 10 days after the armistice was signed ending WWI and the fighting ended, the British Navy celebrated a great victory when the entire German fleet surrendered in the Firth of Forth. Seventy German ships were escorted into the sheltered estuary by hundred's of Allied ships and aircraft.
- The Ancient Kingdom of Fife was once called 'Fib' and was one of the seven Ancient Pick Kingdoms of Scotland which came into power when the Romans left.
- Home to on one of Britain's oldest tennis courts, Falkland Palace and Gardens was built in 1539 for James V.
- The American singer, Johnny Cash, also had special ties to Fife. He has Scottish roots from this area, even though his relatives sailed across the Atlantic in the 1700's.
- The famous opening scene in the movie, 'Chariots of Fire' was filmed on St Andrew's West Sands Beach.
- Not only did the Anstruther Harbour Fish Bar win the UK's Best Fish & Chips Award, but it is also home to the Scottish Fishing Museum.
